Even 1 mistake will make your Namkha ineffective – and you’ll need to start the process again. Be attentive.
Learning how to make a Namkha is uneasy and requires dedication. It’s direct working with one’s energy – so many frustrating and stopping your process things appear during the process – in addition to challenges of learning the method.
Tutorial course - theory and practical construction
Tutorial #1. What is a Namkha?
Tutorial #2. 4 types of a Namkha
– Namkha for a year of birth
In total one person/project/event can have 4 Namkhas.
They are calculated for 4 different periods of birth/creation.
E.g. a person was born on 13.10.83 at 12:56 pm.
This person can have Namkhas:
For Tibetan Year of birth – made for 1983 year
For Tibetan Month of birth – made for October 1983
For Tibetan Day of birth – made for 13 October 1983
For Tibetan Time of birth – made for 12:56 pm on 13 October 1983
These are 4 different astrological periods. The most important for harmonization and healing is a Namkha made for Tibetan Time of birth. It provides the most unique and accurate astrological disposition of a person – and thus has the biggest impact.
Tutorial #3. How to calculate a Year Namkha
Right now there’s an an opportunity to get a free calculation for Year Namkhas.
They are less powerful than other types – Hour, Day or Month Namkhas – but it’s recommended to start make Namkhas with them.
Enter date of birth – or date of creation of your project/initiative/event
Download the calculation. The default version is intended only for male persons. If a person is female, flip image horizontally.
If you get a calculation not for a person, but for a project/initiative/event – it can be tricky to specify its “gender”. In my case all my projects are made for a female version as they are all created by a woman.
Colors for yarn and seed syllables according to the latest edition of the “Namkha” book by C.N.Norbu (p. 2022)
How to draw seed syllables – instructions
Seed syllables can be drawn with color gel pens, color pencils or color gouache. I’ve come through evolution from the first to the last option- and like gouache the most.
Painting seed syllables with gouache reconstructs the old-fashion way in which Bonpos would draw them – using dyes and brushes.
Gel pens are easy to start with, but not sustainable and contribute msod to plastic pollution – I don’t recommend this option – since the Namkha making is a shamanic practice.
If you’re new to the process, the compromise is using one black gel pen to draw all seed syllables – this option is valid.
Remember that for metal element and water element colors for yarn and seed syllables differ. We draw them in colors we use to visualize elements in 5 elements purification mantra.
◈ Useful tips:
Tensioning is the most important parameter in a Namkha. Keep your thread strong and tight while weaving. It’s useful to use binder clips to hold the thread when you need to take a break or add a thread of another color
When you finish weaving a rhombus, it’s handy to hold a thread with masking tape.
Mistakes happen, and sometimes you’ll need to untie a knot. Use a thin awl for this case.
